As an American history teacher, I am always searching for interactive lessons that will peak student interest. The World War One simulation was exactly what I was looking for. The students loved it, student engagement was high, and the simulation covered the state objectives. If you need a new plan for teaching World War One, David Harms’ simulation is what you are looking for.

Kids Running to Class
10/25/2013
Engaged and excited, my students couldn’t wait to get hold of their “Top Secret” folders and start negotiating and strategizing in Europe.
Not just a really fun activity, at the end our class wide reflection revealed that students understood the complexity (and futility) of the Great War. Their geographical understanding increased through the interactive maps. I would highly recommend this learning tool!

World War I Simulation
10/31/2013
The World War I simulation is a highly interactive activity that combines critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. Students strategize and prepare with their allies to meet their objectives. The utilization of maps and troop strength in real-time forces decision-making and cooperation. The World War I simulation is what is trending now.

Fantastic product!
11/04/2013
I was looking for a new and more engaging method of introducing my students to the First World War when I found this world war simulation online. It is not exactly as advertised – it is much letter! Not only did David’s simulation force the kids to be problem solvers and critical thinkers, it took their reasoning skills to another level. The sim brings the least engaged student to the edge of their seat and all I had to do is facilitate the discussions and manage the spreadsheet – the kids did the rest. The toughest job I had was getting them out of the room at the end of the hour. I would not hesitate to recommend this product to any teacher trying to bring The Great War to life.

Highly recommended!

This is the first simulation I used with my JROTC cadets, and I was very pleased with the results! The students spent hours discussing WWI during lunch, on the bus, and while doing research on their own time. The simulation helped them see the “flow” of the events, and the students were excited about the interactive model.

WW I Simulation and Lesson Plan
12/16/2013
I have found this simulation to be very student orientated. They love it and get VERY involved. You can hear them talking about it in the hallways and plotting on how to take each other out. They learn the geography of Europe quite well with this simulation. The critical thinking skills they apply in order to attempt to reach their goals are greatly expanded. This seems to be the one activity that all my students remember long after they are no longer in my class. I highly recommend it to any teacher teaching World War I.

Great Simulation
12/18/2013
This simulation was great for my World History freshmen. They loved coming to class each day to find out what was going to happen, and it aligned perfectly with what I was teaching in class. As a teacher, I loved that each student was directly involved with the simulation, whether it be attacking, building secret alliances, or spying on each other. The students actually asked to do it again a second time without having to be historically accurate, allowing us to play out a “what if” scenario for WWI.

WWI Simulation is awesome!!
12/28/2013
I thought my lesson plans for WW1 were pretty good, and then I got this simulation and realized that this is amazing! Kids really get excited about this, and without realizing they are spending hours of time doing extra homework and research over the course of the simulation. When you get done with this simulation, you will be blown away by what your students know about WW1.

A must have in any American History class!
02/10/2014
I was looking for a way to increase my student’s interest in history as well as further their understanding of the events. This was, without a doubt, the best way to motivate my students. Not only do they enjoy it, they actually learn! They sought out additional information and asked critical questions. They worked together. Every day I was addressing numerous learning objectives and standards.
And if you ever have any questions the support you receive very prompt and worthwhile. I teach in a very small school. I had 8 students participate in this simulation and it still worked out great because Mr. Harms was able to customize the simulation to my needs. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who teaches about U.S. or World History!

Excellent Addition to the Class
03/08/2015
I have run the World War I simulation with my Honors 10 World History classes and U.S. History classes for the past three years. This is an amazing product that generates immediate student engagement. It blends perfectly with the teaching standards we incorporate and provides a nice balance to traditional learning methods. The biggest problem we face is keeping the students focused on their other classes as they get consumed with planning, plotting, and striving to accomplish their objectives. New students usually ask on the first day if we’re going to run the simulation having heard about it from the students the previous year.

Awesome!
07/18/2015
I teach at a school where my students have little to no connection to the outside world especially when it comes to history. While this simulation has a huge learning curve (most of my 7th graders academically are at 4th or 5th grade level) they were eventually able to pick it up and their interest in WWI grew dramatically! They had so much fun to the point where teachers in other classes heard kids talking about it and arguing with each other over strategy and alliances. I strongly recommend this product to any Social Studies class out there! As a game it covers all parts of the WWI experience such as alliances (both secret and public), technology, defensive war tactics, and connecting to real events! This was absolutely amazing! Thanks!!!

WWI SIMULATION GETS STUDENTS INVOLVED
08/09/2015
I used the WWI simulation for the 1st time last year and the kids loved it. My kids were engaged and actively involved. I enjoyed the outcome so much that I purchased and used the WWII simulation as well. I recommend this to any history teacher that is looking to increase student buy-in & involvement.

WWI Simulation Brings History Alive
08/21/2015
The WWI simulation is fantastic and age appropriate for my 6th grade students. Without question, it gets the students involved and hands on. However, what I really enjoy is the critical thinking skills that students must use to successfully complete the simulation. Literacy standards are important and this simulation helps me conquer them for the unit in a way that makes my students forget they’re working on a school assignment. It’s a joy to hear my students working on the simulation outside of the classroom. The lunch table was buzzing for several days during this unit. Fantastic product!

Great Customer Service
01/14/2016
I had some issues downloading the product. I reached out to the company and immediately received a reply. Although several attempts to download did not work, the company continued to reach out to me with solutions so that I could have access to the material. I am blown away at the professionalism and customer care given. The company did not rest until they were certain I was finally able to download all my materials. I can’t wait to look them over and use them.

Motivating

As always, Mr. Harms has spent countless hours making my teaching life less complicated. This lesson has built in motivation for all students. I will not hesitate to use this lesson again this year.

Excellet Product
09/13/2016
I first used this last year and it was the most engaging WWI unit I’ve ever done. Students became very invested in the simulation, and were incredibly excited to come to class and play it everyday! It does require a bit of setup on the part of the teacher, but it’s worth it.

A great way to get students engaged
09/14/2016
I used this simulation with my World History classes and they loved it. Many of my students said it was extremely interesting and they were really into the competition side of the activity. A great idea, especially towards the end of the year.

Highlight Every Year
04/06/2018
I’ve done this simulation for two years now, and my students love it. I decorate the room, and add a few of my own personal touches to the simulation, but it’s a superb product on its own. The students love controlling their own country, making battle plans, and watching the drama unfold. It’s a tremendous way to get students engaged, and to use as a jumping off point for many discussions/assessments about the war. The teachable moments come from the students interactions – students forming their own alliances, becoming competitive to win, and feeling pride in their “country”. It’s student driven and wonderful to see kids come alive. You can differentiate students with different levels by pairing them with other students to run an empire together. I’ve laminated many of the materials and I intend to continue to buy a subscription each year. Last year I reflected with my students on the course, and almost all of them said that the WWI simulation was the highlight of the school year.

Teacher
04/07/2018
This product brought a lot of emotions, critical thinking, and engagement! This simulation brought the students that usually do not engage into group activities to be highly engaged and made a lot critical decisions. I would highly recommend this simulation to anyone that is a social studies teacher.

It’s a hit!
04/13/2018
This simulation, along with the WW2 simulation, are definitely highlights of the year for us. My students ask about it as soon as we start school in August and they wait for it all year! Once it comes, they can’t stop talking about it. I actually have to apologize in advance to the rest of their teachers because the students talk about it in all of their other classes. We have been doing this since 2015 and every year is so different! The characteristics of the individual students have such an impact on how the simulation goes. It opens so many doors to teach about the actual history and they are so engaged after the simulation when we go over what really happened. It’s also a great lead in to the more complicated WW2 simulation. I like to play epic music in the background to increase the drama as well. They really love that.
