I used the World War Two simulation in my class for the first time last year and my students loved it. The students were focused and engagement was high. This is definitely a lesson students will take with them when they leave the classroom.

Awesome extension

I am the teacher in charge of the ‘gifted program’ at school and found out about this simulation via email. 18 students opted to undertake the sessions and with David’s help, took on various leadership roles of their countries. Lots of strategic planning took place, alliances made and broken, losses and gains. The students were totally immersed in the simulation and were plotting their next moves during time out of school and class. I will definitely offer this again next year (by request of the students) and will know the program a lot better myself. This is an excellent way of bringing World War two to life, encourage creative and strategic thinking, problem solving, people and leadership skills. It was great to see the kids totally focused and interactive.

Bring on the Battles

This simulation provides you with everything you need take a good lesson on WWII and make it into a GREAT one. Students were engaged, they negotiated, they argued, they battled, they let loose with cheers for victory and groans of defeat. One class had a dancer who would get up and dance to battle music while I put in the values, another even had a want to be bookie who would try to get kids to bet on who would come out victorious before battles were completed. Mr. Harms really extends himself to ensure you are comfortable with all aspects of the program by allowing you to not only email him with questions, but to also call him. I found this invaluable as WWII is the most complex of these simulations to start with. I purchased the bundle and definitely plan on using other simulations to bring energy and entertaining learning to my classroom.

Amazing product

My students who normally do not get engaged terribly in lessons LOVED this product. They negotiated, argued and really took on the persona of their country (one even took over NZ because the other country was slack). It was great for those that got engaged some found it too difficult but with more explanation and an example (on my part) I can see it working amazing (this was my first simulation so we muddled through it together). It added a new depth to the students learning and they are starting to make the links. The support from David is amazing – happy to answer any queries at any time (with the time difference this was really good customer service) and he stepped me through the simulation. Will be doing this again = even thinking of doing it again at the end of the year with a different set of students.

This was the best $40 I have spent for my classroom in a long time and if you ask my students they will tell you this was the best lesson we had all year. This activity took over our middle school. The kids were discussing it and strategizing every chance they got. Since I teach 7th graders, I modified the point system for grading because I wanted them to engage in the activity not worry about earning points. However, when I had them complete the Simulation Report I was amazed at what all they had learned from the activity. I know that I will do this again next year because the 6th graders are already asking me about it.

It’s just like Axis vs. Allies!

This is just a fantastic way to teach WWII. No stuffy, old videos. No boring worksheets or writing assignments. You get to pit your kids against each other; there’s nothing that the students love more than competing against each other for bragging rights. While they are competing, though, they will also be learning. Definitely suggest having the most charismatic student in class be Hitler, it makes the game a lot more interesting. If your school follows Marzano strategies this is a great way to introduce Domain 4 into your classroom. I love how the game uses writing in a fun way, the kids didn’t even know they were writing! The journal entries serve as a great way to show content mastery, no need for tests. I had my school buy this for me last year and I’m so glad that I did, don’t hesitate, buy it!

Excellent Simulation

I have run the World War II simulation with my Honors 10 World History classes and U.S. History classes for the past three years. This is an amazing product that generates immediate student engagement. It blends perfectly with the teaching standards we incorporate and provides a nice balance to traditional learning methods. The biggest problem we face is keeping the students focused on their other classes as they get consumed with planning, plotting, and striving to accomplish their objectives. New students usually ask on the first day if we’re going to run the simulation having heard about it from the students the previous year. I found this a great follow up simulation to the World War I simulation because students were already familiar with the process, but the additional resource rules made it a new challenge.

World War Bundle

I purchased the bundle WWI, WWII, and Cold War simulation in 2013. I have played this with my students almost every year and the kids absolutely are completely engaged. Many can’t wait to arrive each day to begin their next moves. Battles are epic. Recently, I had a compatibility issue with my software and the software used in this program. I reached out to Mr. Harms and he almost immediately replied, offered me a few solutions to help me get through day and then followed up to ensure I was able to progress(which I was!). Buying this product, you not only get a great hands on simulation, but you get the follow up excellent customer service that is so helpful if you are not a tech savvy person. Excellent for Student Engagement

This simulation provides an in-depth experience that created genuine critical thinking opportunities for my students. It went as far as trade agreements and military alliances being discussed at lunch and outside of school. The only improvements I would suggest would be greater use of air and naval forces and a more engaging final report. Overall a hit that engaged my students and got them interested in history like I have never seen before.

Academic Decathlon Team-World War II

Our Academic Decathlon team is preparing for competition covering the topic of World War II. We played the Simulation Game last week in two classes, and the dynamic exchanges and excitement evident in each class period was wonderful. I taped some exchanges and have added them to our portfolio for administration and shared it with parents. I have the students hounding me each day, wondering when we will use the Simulation again. My students loved applying the unit’s lesson to our simulation and to have the opportunity to try and “change” history. They love activities that help bring history to life and they forget that they are learning. This is another great simulation to run for students, especially if you’re using it as a sequel to the World War One simulation! I’ve never seen students so invested in history! A great way for students to learn critical thinking skills, communication skills, as well as content. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to find an engaging lesson for World War II!

A Real Winner

For several years, I used the original paper version of the WWII simulation. It’s an excellent product. The students are totally engaged and get a real feel for the decision making process and the obstacles they need to face. Additionally, they actually learn geography because they have to interact with the other countries. Believe it or not, using this simulation helps with the Vietnam War because they understand where Indochina is and how it functioned as a colony. The downside was the activity required a lot of teacher time. This need for extensive teacher time is eliminated with the online version. It makes it much easier and incorporates technology into your classroom. This is a real winner.

Highlight of the Year

I’ve been using the WW 2 simulation for the past three years, and every spring, the students react the same way: “This is the best thing we’ve done all year!” I use it with my 8th grade American History class. I tend to run it a bit slower than suggested, utilizing 90 minutes per year as opposed to a standard 50-60 minute class period. The kids are highly engaged, often making plans over lunch, passing secret notes during French class (not that I’m encouraging it), etc. They have a firm grasp of world geography by the end of the simulation, in addition to a grasp of the complexities of foreign relations, diplomacy, and the challenges facing both sides in WW 2. Can’t recommend it enough.

This was my first trial with this product. I used it for 8th grade to spice-up the sometimes dull atmosphere. For my environment, I was divided between operating the computer and monitoring the few slackers. The vast majority loved it and engaged fully. I will try the same simulation with my 11th grade class to see how age affects the creative problem-solving. I recommend the package. For first-timers, I suggest creating a “test” class and watch the tutorial while you use all the functions. Brilliant work by Mr Harms in making this program!
