    Great simulation
    11/21/2013
I really enjoyed implementing the Civil War Simulation in my Honors American History class. It provided an interesting, hands-on opportunity for students to work through many of the real-life challenges and problems that were faced by states and leaders during this time period. Furthermore, the emphasis on analytical, group-centered problem solving was a real winner in terms of skill development. I would certainly recommend this to teachers who are looking to enhance their Civil War units.

    Civil War Simulation
    12/03/2013
The Civil War simulation was another outstanding tool that Mr. Harms has created. I used the WWI last year and my students were begging me to use another simulation. I teach 8th grade and found it very easy for those students to use. I have recommended for my brother who teaches in high school to use it. The simulation works well with many age groups because the rules are simple and it develops depending on the students using it. This simulation demonstrated to my students the affect industry had on the Civil War. They realized that it was very difficult for the south to maneuver and combat the superior industry of the north. Reading and talking about this fact did not have the same affect on the class. It wasn’t until this simulation that my students understood why majority of the war was fought only the border of the north and the south. When they saw the simulation taking place it became quite clear why the war went the way it did. All teachers should give this simulation a try.

    Civil War Simulation

Once again I was really happy with the simulation provided by historysimulation.com This simulation helps students understand the advantages the North had in terms of industry over the South. My students were engaged throughout the activity and really enjoyed the activity. My curriculum instructor also observed me during this activity and was really happy with the student engagement and critical thinking/collaboration which the activity provides. This is the second simulation I have used from Mr. Harms and will continue to add his simulations to my curriculum.

    Civil War Simulation

A former colleague of mine turned me on to Mr. Harms’ simulations. He had purchased the WWII simulation for his AP World History class, and the students were constantly talking about it. I decided this year to purchase the Civil War Simulation by Mr. Harms, and it is excellent. I teach 8th Grade History, and the simulation is great for reaching all types of students. The simulation was great at teaching the advantages of each side. Many of my students were also able to understand why the North and South adopted the war strategies they had. My students were very excited to play the simulation, and the learning didn’t stop at the door. Additionally many 7th graders that had heard about the game approached me talking about how they cannot wait until next year to play it. I run several different simulations throughout the year, and this one generated the most excitement by far. This is a great addition to any Civil War Unit. I recommend any one to get it.

Great Tool to Make it “Real”
    08/08/2016
This simulation did a wonderful job making the advantages and disadvantages of both the North and the South real for my students. Dealing with troops, supplies, and transportation made key concepts hit home and greatly improved student performance on assessments that followed. Any time students can experience and engage with history, they will internalize the material more and think more critically. Mr. Harms’ products, and this simulation in particular, do just that.

    Great Recap!
    08/11/2016
I’ve used this simulation in my classroom for the past 3 years with 8th graders. I’ve used it before and after studying the Civil War. I have found that it is an amazing review and helps students solidify a lot of their learning in regards to strategy, cooperation, and difficulties faced by both sides. It’s a great way to end the year and one of the most memorable activities we do!

    Amazing!

I used the on-line Civil War Simulation with my high school elective class America at War. This class includes a variety of different learners and this simulation engaged them all. The on-line version made it easy to track what each side was doing and turned students on to the planning and strategy that is involved in war.

    Engaging and Fun
    09/11/2016
I used the simulation with my 8th grade U.S. history class. My students loved the idea of controlling the military forces and learned to work together to coordinate their attacks. They were able to experience how the advantages of the North made the eventual outcome inevitable despite the South’s best efforts. The only reason I did not rate this as 5 stars is because the math and relabeling and numbering of each state had to be done manually which took enough time to lose the attention of students. Other than that the simulation is a great way to engage students and allow them to experience the Civil War in a new and relevant way.

Great for any Civil War Unit
    10/09/2016
My students loved this simulation. The decisions that students must make mirror the decisions had to make
in real life. The lesson is very straight forward with no issues. Not a very steep learning curve and once
you get the hang of how to moderate it the lesson runs itself. Mr. Harm is very good about answering
questions about the lesson if you do get stuck. He responds to e-mails promptly and efficiently. Honestly
there is no reason not to buy this lesson for yourself and your students.

    It’s Awesome!

I have used the Civil War simulation and learning materials in our homeschool with our 10 year old son. He really enjoys it and the lesson facts and teaching material add a lot of depth to the simulation. We have found it quite enjoyable and will be purchasing other history simulations in the future!

    Proof that they get it!
    08/14/2018
This was recommended by a friend I met at graduate school. I am going into my third school year using this simulation and have been very impressed that the simulation activates the concepts that explain why the Civil War played out the way it did. Students have even donated costumes for President Lincoln and Jefferson Davis to wear!
